In
August, 2005 The
President signed the Central American Free
Trade Agreement – Dominican Republic (CAFTA-DR), a free
trade pact between the US and five Central American
nations and the Dominican Republic to open the region's
markets to goods, services, and food products from the
United States.
Over
80% of products from the member countries (Costa Rica,
El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua and the
Dominican Republic) are already eligible for duty-free
treatment upon importation into the United States.
CAFTA-DR “levels the playing field” by eliminating
tariffs on US exports to CAFTA countries, and could
potentially increase exports to the region by as much as
$1.5 billion - a 10% improvement.
Three
countries, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, have
already ratified the pact, which will go into effect as
soon as those countries and the US agree on a date. The
agreement has the potential to expand supply chain
opportunities significantly to and within Latin America
and the Caribbean. |
